Symphonic Band Information

On February 12 and 13 we are hosting our Symphonic Band Camp, which is required for all of our Symphonic Band students.  It is a grade and has been scheduled since August.  I wanted to give everyone plenty of “heads up” before the event, which is a couple of weeks away.

Mr. Elliott will be our guest conductor, plus I am bringing in sectional help.  The Boosters will be providing food for the weekend as well.

This is scheduled in order for us to better prepare for Concert Festival Assessment in March.  A reminder that Festival Assessment is scheduled for Friday, March 26 in the evening (a requirement that is a must for everyone!).  This is the last day of school before spring break.  We are required to perform at assessment in the spring in order to have a marching band compete in the fall.  Again, this was on the schedule as well.

Concert Band Attire

We always strive to put on the most professional concert programs possible. To this end, we ask students to follow a very strict concert uniform policy.  We do this so that the ensemble not only plays as one, but also appears as one.  Variations in concert dress can be distracting to audiences and can take away from the music that is being made.  The uniform will constitute a portion of each individual’s performance grade at each concert given.

As noted in the GCHS and GCMS Band Handbooks, all band students 6-12 will this year be wearing all black for concerts.  Please make arrangements to acquire all needed parts well in advance of the first concerts.  To further define all black, we mean the following:

Shirts/Blouses:  Solid black with no other color visible.  No patterns or print.  These should be of a dressy nature - button ups or polo shirts with collars (and black buttons) for men and dressier style tops for ladies).  Long sleeves are preferred, but are not mandatory.

Pants/dresses/skirts:  Solid black with no other color visible.  The material should not be denim.  No cargo pants or pants that have more than the usual four pockets.  Skirts and dresses of full length are preferred, but are not mandatory (must conform to school dress code lengths).  Shorts are unacceptable.

Socks/Shoes:  All men must wear solid black socks with no other color visible.  Ladies who wear socks must also conform to this type.  Shoes must be solid black with no ornamentation, pattern, or other color visible (very small buckles for the straps on women’s shoes are acceptable).  Shoes must not be sneakers or other athletic-type footwear.  Dress shoes must be worn.  Men’s footwear must conceal the toe.  Ladies footwear that conceals the toes is preferable, but not mandatory

Jewelry:  Other than small, stud-sized earrings, no jewelry of any type is to be worn.
